I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I’ve ever gotten to a college graduation.
Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That’s it. No big deal. Just three stories.

The first story is about connecting the dots.

I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?

It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last-minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: “We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?” They said: “Of course.” My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.

And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents’ savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn’t see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn’t interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.

It wasn’t all romantic. I didn’t have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends’ rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:

Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn’t have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can’t capture, and I found it fascinating.

None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, it’s likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.

Again, you can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

My second story is about love and loss.

I was lucky — I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation — the Macintosh — a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.

I really didn’t know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down – that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me — I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.

I didn’t see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I returned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple’s current renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.

I’m pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn’t been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith. I’m convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.

My third story is about death.

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: “If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn’t even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor’s code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you’d have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.

I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I’m fine now.

This was the closest I’ve been to facing death, and I hope it’s the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:

No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960′s, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.

Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.” It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.

eBay gets worse and I will not purchase any more on it but for something really special that I cannot find anywhere else.

The problem is that if there is a problem the solution take a long time and a lot of frustration, plus the feeback system is flawed by the fact that the sellers with lots of sale use retaliatory feedback and users cannot leave onest opinions on feedbacks.

When Things go wrong using eBay.
It is terrible.
You get aggravated and cannot recover the cost.

Here is my Horror story:
on 5 March 2006
I purchased a laptop PC on eBay from
Henry Fields
my winning bid was for $155
shipping was $35
I paid the $190 the very same day.

Some time later I get a package with the PC in it.
The laptop is listed as: "fully functional", "ready to go"

I open the package and pull out the PC.
It is a laptop.
The screen comes apart, and almost separates from the keyboard. Not a good start.
There is no power adaptor for the laptop (this is a laptop from Dell, it is impossible to use it without a DELL power adaptor)
I manage not to break it and to make it stand, and power it up.
The screen, not surprisingly, has almost 1/2 of the screen unreadable, and look terrible.

I immediately contact the seller by email.
I get an automatic error response.
I have to go to eBay and file to request info on the seller to be able to contact him.
After a few hours I get an email from eBay with the contact information for Henry Fields.
I immediately call his listed phone number.

I explain the situation to him, and he swears that he has tested if for days before shipping it and that he will never ship a broken PC.
After a lengthy discussion he agrees to send me another of the very same PC (he says he has many of them, and that the one I received has probably been damaged during the shipment) making sure that this one works properly, and he assure me he will ship the new one on Friday, we also agree that I will pay him $12.50 to include the power adaptor without which the PC will NOT work.
I ship the broken one back to him the very same day (and pay $30 more in shipping, to send it back)

He send me an email a few days later and states that the PC he has received from me is perfectly working.
I am enraged, he was supposed to have sent me the replacement few days back, but he has NOT shipped it yet.

So I call Henry Fields again, on a long discussion I explain to him that a) if you cannot see half of the screen the PC is not fully functional, b) if the screen breaks a apart from the keyboard the PC is not fully functional either, and this is NOT acceptable.

Now he has a different story, he says that he does not have any more of this type of PCs (he said before he had several others).
He says he wants to refund me $95.00 and I said that I paid $190. And if he cannot provide a working PC I will accept the full refund (note that I will still be out of $30 for shipping the PC back to him), but that I would prefer to have a PC, I bid on eBay to have a PC not to get a refund.
When he realizes that he will have to refund $190 instead of 90 he agrees to send me a PC, he says that he has a similar one, not the same, with different feature, less powerful processor and no DVD. To compensate for the difference we agree that he will install some more RAM.

Again I tell him clearly that he must make sure that the PC is working, to make sure than we do not have to go through this again. Again he says that he will ship the next 2 days and ship it overnight.

Naturally no shipment came in at the time he said.
But finally, after about a week I get another package.
I open it, and see the PC, this one looks better, it has the power adaptor.
I turn it on immediately, and surprise, the screen is completely white and shows nothing.
This time I take a picture and send immediately to Henry Fields.
I call him on the phone, and ask him what the hell he is doing.
he still reiterates that the PC has been damaged during shipment, naturally this is bullshit and I am not going to buy it.

He says he wants to get things right, and other hot air.
I explain to him that it is impossible that the PC has been tested as he tells, and that I think he is selling cheap stuff without even looking at it once.

In the end we get to an agreement, that he will refund me for the PC. He says that he will refund me when I will give him a shipment confirmation of the PC. I ship the PC and tell him the tracking number, we agree that he will refund me by the evening so that I can purchase something else.

The result of this sad story is:

1. I spent a month being aggravated with this and NOT having a PC
2. I paid $155 + $12.50 = $167.50 for the PC
3. I paid $35 + $30 + $30 = $95 in shipment

Henry Fields didn't even refund me the amount he said he would.
I tryed to contact Henry Fields, but he did not answer and I left him a few voice messages, he did NOT call me back.

Was it worth this ?
Definitely NOT.

I am growing weary of eBay sellers.

Next time something like this happen.
No more shipping back at my expense.

I will immediately file an eBay dispute for "Item not as described"
Get a refund.
And ask the seller to pay for the shipment of his junk back.

THE STORY: (first paragraph by Rebecca)

At first, Laurie couldn't decide which kind of tea she wanted. The chamomile, which used to be her favorite for lazy evenings at home, now reminded her too much of Carl,
who once said, in happier times,
that he liked chamomile. But she felt she must now, at all costs, keep her mind off Carl. His possessiveness was suffocating, and if she thought about him too much,
her asthma started acting up again. So chamomile was out of the question.

Meanwhile, Advance Sergeant Carl Harris, leader of the attack squadron now in orbit over Skylon 4, had more important things to think about than the neuroses of an
air-headed asthmatic bimbo named Laurie, with whom he had spent one sweaty night over a year ago.
"A.S. Harris to Geostation 17," he said into his transgalactic
communicator. " Polar orbit established. No sign of resistance so far..." But before he could sign off a bluish particle beam flashed
out of nowhere and blasted a hole through his ship's cargo bay. The jolt from the direct hit sent him flying out of his seat and across the cockpit.

I have many miles with Delta.
Unfortunately it seems that in the last 5 years I could not manage to use them for any of the flights i needed to take, it seems that redeming skymiles is a legend, even if I try to make reservation several months in advance.

A few years ago I was very pleased with Delta airlines, and I signed up for their frequent flier program SkyMiles.
Unfortunately it has proven extremely hard to use the rewards earned and I

Flights returned for a trip are in an unknown order (not price, not number of stops, not travel time) what use is that ?

E si sono salvati gli indigeni, quelli che vanno a caccia con arco e frecce, quelli dati per estinti, perchè poveracci sono fuori dalla comunicazione globale .. ma hanno visto la marea che si ritirava e se ne sono andati verso l'alto, con gli animali.
Nell'Era della Comunicazione Globale sessanta canali televisivi mi parlano dello tsunami e mi dicono le cose più allucinanti. L'isola di Sumatra si è spostata di trenta metri, poi trenta centimetri, poi cinque, otto, ventinove, è più alta, più bassa, più larga, più stretta, si è girata su stessa e alla fine se n'è andata completamente, l'han vista ad Alassio, vicino alla Gallinara. L'asse terrestre si è inclinato un po'...Un po' quanto?! Beh, c'è chi dice qualche chilometro, chi dice qualche centimetro ... Ma cosa accadrà?! Faremo la fine dei dinosauri? Sì, no, forse?

Nell'Era della Comunicazione Globale possiamo parlare con il mondo intero. Mandiamo sms,ems,mms,mail, chattiamo tutta la notte con una cicciona del Maine che fa la collezione di colesterolo e ci ha mandato la foto di una figa presa sul web, parliamo, comunichiamo, comunichiamo, comunichiamo .. poi per una precedenza non data ci si spara in faccia! Se telefoni a un call center ne sanno quanto te. A volte, meno di te. Ammesso che risponda qualcuno. Ammesso che non ti sbattano il telefono in faccia.
Siamo nell'Era della Comunicazione Globale e non riusciamo più a parlare con nessuno. Una volta andavi da chi ti aveva venduto un prodotto e gli dicevi: "Oh, ciccio, sta roba non mi funziona ...". Adesso devi telefonare a un numero. Verde, quando va bene. Quando non va bene paghi. Hai un problema dovuto a un loro prodotto e paghi per dirglielo. Poi paghi per stare in attesa e infine ti fanno girare così tante persone che alla fine se non hanno già messo giù loro metti giù tu. Ti hanno venduto un prodotto o un servizio che non funziona o che ha dei problemi e paghi per restare nella merda!
Si è capovolto il mondo, altro che spostamento di qualche centimentro...
Nell'Era della Comunicazione Globale le comunicazioni ci arrivano anche quando non le vogliamo. Ci sommergono. Ogni giorno scarico dieci tonnellate di spam nella mia mailbox. Quotidianamente, almeno cento mail con soggetto "ENLARGE YOUR PENIS". Vogliono vendermi un metodo per ingrandire il bigolo. Le credenziali in effetti sono ottime: mi hanno già fatto venire due coglioni così. Adesso mandano le mail non richieste con questa premessa: Ai sensi della Legge 675/96 sulla Privacy, la informiamo che il suo indirizzo E-Mail è stato rintracciato sui motori di ricerca. E quindi? Mi avete mandato una mail per restituirmelo?
Nell'Era della Comunicazione Globale ci sono quasi un miliardo di analfabeti nel mondo.
Siamo tutti depressi. Le coppie si lasciano perché non c'è dialogo. I figli e i genitori non comunicano più e se comunicano è pure peggio. Papà, mi servono 300 sacchi ché devo comprarmi un hard disk, ho troppi pochi giga. Eh?! ma che dici? Ma non puoi andare ad ubriacarti in discoteca come tutti?
Abbiamo smesso di parlarci e abbiamo iniziato a telefonarci solo col cellulare, più fico...poi un cell non basta, due , tre... l'importante è pagarlo almeno 500 euro ed avere quattro orecchie. Poi abbiamo smesso di telefonarci e abbiamo iniziato a mandarci gli sms. Quelli normali, quelli colorati, quelli con il disegnino, quelli con le foto e quelli con il filmato. Ciao, ti mando un filmato di me stesso mentre ti dico ciao! Ma fai due passi e vieni a dirmelo in faccia che ci facciamo una birra.
Siamo impazziti. Abbonati oggi e avrai 5000 sms in omaggio! 5000?! Ma che cosa devo dire con 5000 sms? Ma a chi li mando? Gratis, ovviamente. A noi qualcuno regala sempre qualcosa. Gratis, gratis, gratis. Questa è la comunicazione: fallo subito, è gratis! Abbonati, è gratis. Clicca qui, è gratis. E' tutto gratis! Ma voi, tranne a cari amici e parenti, avete mai regalato qualcosa a qualcuno? Non parlo di beneficenza. Parlo di prendere una cosa, magari frutto del vostro lavoro, e regalarla a un perfetto sconosciuto che passa di lì. Così, per il gusto di regalarla. Magari, non so, c'è un idraulico fra di voi. A te idraulico che stai leggendo, ti è mai successo di alzare il telefono, fare un numero a caso e dire: "Buongiorno, sono un idraulico, vuole che venga a casa sua a rinnovare i tubi del cesso gratis"?
E nell'Era della Comunicazione Globale comunichi anche quando stai zitto. Con il silenzio assenso. Una mattina ti svegli, per esempio, e scopri di avere un servizio di segreteria telefonica. E l'hai chiesto tu stando zitto! Se parlavi, magari non te lo mettevano. Ma siccome sei stato zitto .. cosa vuoi? Ti riempiono di questi servizi. Sei circondato. Anzi: è tutto intorno a te. Quando vedo la Gale ormai ho più voglia di scuoiarla che ciularmela.
La Grande Comunicazione Globale ... e l'unica speranza che hai di comunicare con questi qui è che il Gabibbo si prenda compassione di te.
Nell'Era della Comunicazione Globale abbiamo perso il senso delle parole. Se non sei di destra sei comunista. Ma io non sono comunista! A me non piace il comunismo. In Studying the Einsten relativity I could never understand why there was the need of the postulate
The speed of light is constant for all frames of reference
and if there were any experimental data that proved this.

Finally I found an theory that agrees with my feeling that the speed of light CANNOT be CONSTANT for all frame of refrence.

It is really for me hard to understand why the speed of light should be constant for all observer.
This is the second postulate for Standard Relativity, and I am convionced that assuming this is incorrect.

Without going into phisics or mathematics details, this does not sound right somply because there is NOTHING ELSE in the universe that behave like this.
I mean: if you push something it goes faster!
Or if 2 photons run parallel, won't each see the other as still ?
And if the instead go one againt the other won't they see each other go at 2c (going though the space in half the rime ?)

For this I agree with the Emitter Theory where c (the speed of light) is constant only in reference to the emitter, as anything else in our world.

That c is constant in any frame of reference is counterintuitive and I think can generate situations that would be inconsistent.

A will now try to explain with an example.
It is a variation from an example from a book on String Theory.

Let assume that we create a "Photonic clock", this clock measures times, by counting how many times a photon bounces between 2 mirrors.

Let's assume we have 2 of these clocks, and we give one to Tim and Jeff one to Jeff.
Naturally the photons move at c (the speed of light), c does will be the same from any point of fererence.

Now let's assume that Tim stay still and Jeff starts running in one direction at speed r.

Clearly from Tim point of view the photon path in Jeff clock is longer than Tim photon that bounces vertically.
Now, if c is constant from any point of reference, Tim CANNOT observe the the photon of Jeff to move at a different speed than his own photon. Note that Jeff is supposed to see his photon bounce vertically as usual.

This therefore creates a contraddiction.
Tim sees Jeff photonic clock photon move faster than his.

Note that if Tim would see Jeff photon go at the same speed (c) the photon will shift its bouncing point and finally bouncing out if the mirror, leaving Jeff photonic clock without photon.

So what is that will be observed ?
a. Is Jeff photon being lost (keep going at c as constant)
b. Or is it staying in Jeff clock (therefore speeding up in respect to Tim to allow to run more distance in the same time, therefore going faster than c) ?

The first possibilities is impossible since it will mean that Tim and Jeff will observe 2 diffrent realities (Tim sees Jeff loose the photon where Jeff sees that he keeps it).

The second option instead, that Jeff photon does actually speed up faster than c,
will work just fine, as we would expect, that each will keep their photon.

This is explained by the Emitter Theory
where c is constant only from the source.
That means that c is the speed of the photon from where it is emitted.

The Michelson-Morley experiment correctly shows no result (no interference, no aether) because the photons speed is the same from the emitter, therefore they take exactly the same time to go in either direction, they each go at c + the speed of earth.

E' con gran rammarico che sono testimone che lo SPAM (illegale) viene usato oggi anche a per propaganda politica, nella mia citta'.
Ho ricevuto infatti molte email da questo signor "Bruno Cardini", dipendende della ULSS di Valdagno che si candida a sindaco di Valdagno.

Per promuovere la sua campagana ha pensato bene di inviare SPAM email a tutte le email che ha potuto trovare.
E non intende desistere.

Voglio chiarire che personalmente, non ho nulla contro le sue idee politiche, che peraltro non conosco.

Ma sono certamente contrario all'invio di email SPAM per qualsiasi motivo.

Inviare email SPAM e' illegale. Il parlamento ha approvato leggi specifiche su questo argomento. DL 185/99
Il fatto che io abbia il mio indirizzo su siti web non la autorizza per nulla a mandarmi SPAM.
Legga di nuovo il cotratto che lei ha accettato con Interfree. Lo ho citato nella mia email a interfree.

La buona educazione l'ho usata la volta scorsa, nell'email a cui lei non ha avuto la decenza di rispondere.
Ora per me e' solo una pardita di tempo e consumo di risorse per colpa sua.

Se lo fara, e mi coinvolgera', io faro' tutto il possibile per fermarla.

Sono sconcertato dalla pochezza della tua esperienza, e dalla ingenuita' della tua risposta.

Riguardo al fornire tutti i miei indirizzi. La tua idea e' a dir poco stupida.

Per cercare di farti capire ti faccio una ANALOGIA.

Se tu scoprissi che qualcuno usa illegalmente la tua carta di credito, e scoprissi chi e', e lo contattassi per intimarlo a smettere.
Se lui ti chiedesse:
"Per cortesia mandami la lista di tutte le tue carte di credito con i numeri, cosi' mi assicurero' di non usare illegalemente una delle tue carte di credito in futuro".

Tu invieresti prontamente la lista delle tue carte di credito?

Prova a riflettere un attimo su questa cosa.
Dopo qualche minuto immagino che anche tu ti accorgerai che non e' poi un'idea cosi' furba.

Rivedi il vostro contratto di servizio, che per altro ho allegato alla scorsa email.
Ma che sembra tu non ti sia degnato di leggere, un documento della tua stessa azienda.

Suggerisco inoltre di rivedere la legge italiana.

The story I know about the origin of our name Zordan is as follows, based on some research that my father Silvio www.SilvioZordan.com did some time ago.

It appears that our origin could be of Norsemen (The barbarians who lived in what is nowdays Austria).
In fact most of the Zordan I know have Blonde hair and Blue eyes.

The Venetian republic "La Serenissima" (697-1797: 1000 years), in its splendor, owned most of the land in the North East of Italy, from Venice to Milan, and was the greatest marine power in the world.

It appears from my father research, that the Venetian republic hired people from the North (the Norsemen) to cut trees and do woodwork to build their ships.

A Norsemen tribe named Zordan relocated in the Valdagno (Crespadoro, Altissimo, and neighborhood) area to do woodwork for the Serenissima (Doge.it)

The meaning of the name appears to be "wood of dry pines".
Some historians think that the name translated from an early sort of German language is related to pines that were cut and left to dry. Another interpretation is that the name refers to wood of "Larch", a type of pine (pines are always green) that differently than the normal pine is seasonal and in the winter it looses its leaves, appearing dry.

(A book on the history of the area of Valdagno (Crespadoro) in Italian is "L'Ontano" by Mantese).

Looking back, it's hard to believe that we have lived as long as we have....

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags. Riding in the back of a pickup truck on a warm day was always a special treat. Our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paint. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors, or cabinets, and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle. Horrors. We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then rode down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times we learned to solve the problem.

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. No cell phones. Unthinkable. We played dodgeball and sometimes the ball would really hurt. We got cut and broke bones and broke teeth and there were no law suits from these accidents. They were accidents. No one was to blame but us. Remember accidents? We had fights and punched each other and got black and blue and learned to get over it. We ate cupcakes, bread and butter, and drank sugar soda but we were never overweight.... .....we were always outside playing. We shared one grape soda with four friends, from one bottle and no one died from this?

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo 64, X Boxes, video games at all, 99 channels on cable, video tape movies, surround sound, personal cellular phones, Personal Computers, Internet chat rooms, ............... we had friends. We went outside and found them. We rode bikes or walked to a friend's home and knocked on the door, or rung the bell or just walked in and talked to them. Imagine such a thing. Without asking a parent! By ourselves! Out there in the cold cruel world! Without a guardian. How did we do it?

We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and ate worms and although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes, nor did the worms live inside us forever.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment..... Some students weren't as smart as others so they failed a grade and were held back to repeat the same grade.....Horrors. Tests were not adjusted for any reason.

Our actions were our own. Consequences were expected. No one to hide behind. The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law, imagine that!

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers and problem solvers and inventors, ever. The past 50 years has been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.

And you're one of them.

A ben pensarci, è difficile credere che siamo vissuti fino ad oggi!!
Da bambini, andavamo in macchina (quelli che avevano la fortuna di averla)senza cinture di sicurezza e senza air bag.
I flaconi dei medicinali non avevano delle chiusure particolari.
Bevevamo l'acqua dalla canna del giardino, non da una bottiglia. Che orrore!!
Andavamo in bicicletta senza usare un casco.
Passavamo dei pomeriggi a costruirci i nostri "carri giocattolo".
Ci lanciavamo dalle discese e dimenticavamo di non avere i freni fino a quando non ci sfracellavamo contro un albero o un marciapiede.
E dopo numerosi incidenti, imparavamo a risolvere il problema.... noi da soli!!!
Uscivamo da casa al mattino e giocavamo tutto il giorno; i nostri genitori non sapevano esattamente dove fossimo, nonostante ciò sapevano che non eravamo in pericolo.
Non esistevano i cellulari. Incredibile!!
Ci procuravamo delle abrasioni, ci rompevamo le ossa o i denti... e non c'erano mai denunce, erano soltanto incidenti: nessuno ne aveva la colpa.
Ti ricordi degli incidenti?
Avevamo delle liti, a volte dei lividi. E anche se ci facevano male e a volte piangevamo, passavano presto; la maggior parte delle volte senza che i nostri genitori lo sapessero mai.
Mangiavamo dei dolci, del pane con moltissimo burro e bevande piene di zucchero... ma nessuno di noi era obeso.
Ci dividevamo una Fanta con altri 4 amici, dalla stessa bottiglia, e nessuno mai morì a causa dei germi.
Non avevamo la Playstation, nè il Nintendo, nè dei videogiochi. Nè la TV via cavo, nè le videocassette, nè il PC, nè internet; avevamo semplicemente degli amici. Uscivamo da casa e li trovavamo.
Andavamo, in bici o a piedi, a casa loro, suonavamo al campanello o entravamo e parlavamo con loro.
Figurati: senza chiedere il permesso!
Da soli! Nel mondo freddo e crudele!
Senza controllo! Come siamo sopravissuti?!
Ci inventavamo dei giochi con dei bastoni e dei sassi.
Giocavamo con dei vermi e altri animaletti e, malgrado le avvertenze dei genitori, nessuno tolse un occhio ad un altro con un ramo e i nostri stomaci non si riempirono di vermi.
Alcuni studenti non erano intelligenti come gli altri e dovevano rifare la seconda elementare. Che orrore!!!
Non si cambiavano i voti, per nessun motivo.
I peggiori problemi a scuola erano i ritardi o se qualcuno masticava una cicca in classe.
Le nostre iniziative erano nostre. E le conseguenze, pure. Nessuno si nascondeva dietro a un altro.
L'idea che i nostri genitori ci avrebbero difeso se trasgredivamo ad una legge non ci sfiorava; loro erano sempre dalla parte della legge.
Se Ti comportavi male i tuoi genitori ti mettevano in castigo e nessuno li metteva in galera per questo.
Sapevamo che quando i genitori dicevano "NO", significava proprio NO.
I giocatoli nuovi li ricevevamo per il compleanno e a Natale, non ogni volta che si andava al supermercato. I nostri genitori ci facevano dei regali con amore, non per sensi di colpa.
E le nostre vite non sono state rovinate perché non ci diedero tutto ciò che volevamo.
Questa generazione ha prodotto molti inventori, amanti del rischio e ottimi risolutori di problemi.
Avevamo libertà, insuccessi, successi e responsabilità, e abbiamo imparato a gestirli.

Fantasia dei giornalisti.

E' incredibile come i giornalisti non esperti di un settore possano essere tanto ingenui e tanto drammatici allo stesso tempo.

In questo articolo, il giornalista si inventa delle panzane mostruose per dare credito alla sua storia sulla sua "epidemia piu' grave della storia".

Per qualche ragione non specificata cita le seguenti panzane:

- "Il suo attacco invisibile ha distrutto due milioni di computer di 168 Paesi"
Questo virus non distrugge nessun computer, semplicemente invia un sacco di email senza che il properietario ne sia a conoscenza, il virus attacca i siti di SCO e Microsoft e cerca di riprodursi su altri computer, ma NON distrugge il computer su cui si trova che gli serve appunto per effettuare l'attaco a SCO e Microsoft.

- "ha infettato il 40 per cento dei messaggi di posta elettronica di tutto il mondo."
Il 40% dei messaggi del mondo, e' un numero strabiliante (credo diverse centinaia di milioni al giorno), comunque non so voi, ma nella mia email (dove ricevo purtroppo molta junk) non ho ricevute nemmeno l'1% di messaggi contenenti questo virus. Controllate la vostra email. E' comunque veramente stupido citare numeri senza avere nessuna idea di cosa si sta parlando.

- "non saperlo combattere"
Quasi tutte le aziende che producono Antivirus (McAfee, Symantec (Norton)) hanno gia' rilasciato soluzioni, tra cui anche la "F-Secure" che il giornalista cita nel suo articolo. Il giorno stesso in cui l'articolo e' stato pubblicato.
PS: Mettere dei riferimenti ai siti di cui si parla in un articolo non sarebbe una cattiva idea giornalistica.

- "nell'ex Urss il virus si è poi diffuso con una velocità mai registrata prima. In poche ore ha raggiunto i Paesi baltici e quelli scandinavi, precipitandosi infine sul resto d'Europa e sugli Usa"
Chiaramente il giornalista ha una visione geografica di internet, come se per inviare un messaggio in Giappone dovessi prima inviarlo in India. L'incompetenza in questo e' incredibile. E io che mi aspettavo che per i giornalisti Internet fosse il loro pane quotidiano e la loro fonte primaria per referenze e verifica delle informazioni.

- "In mezzo al panico elettronico non mancano le voci di un contagio creato proprio dai colossi dell'informatica, pronti a tutto pur di consolidare posizioni di mercato che valgono miliardi di dollari"
Ci mancava proprio in questo articolo un po' di Conspiracy Theory, ma vi sembra plausibile? Che la Microsoft invece che pensare alla produzione del nuovo sistema operativo "corno lungo" pensi bene a fare un bel virus che attacca se stessa e che rallenta i computer dei suoi clienti?
Ma forse e' stata l'IBM, o la SCO o magari qualche altro dei "colossi dell'informatica"
D'altro canto quale modo migliore di "consolidare la posizione di mercato" che creare un bel virus?
Spero capiate l'ironia, o devo aspettarmi che anche "la Repubblica" per cosolidare la sua posizione di mercato stia creando un bel virus ?

- "Mydoom-B infetta i pc alla sola selezione dell'e-mail. Non c'è bisogno di aprire l'allegato: sposti il cursore ed è fatta."
Che grande IDIOZIA, NULLA sul sito della F-Secure (o nessun altro sito anti-virus) dice che il virus si attiva alla sola selezione dell'email. Il virus e' un programma (.exe .com .pif .scr, ...) che come tutti i virus, quello che lo riceve DEVE AVVIARLO per farlo partite. I virus si attivano perche' gli utenti li eseguono (aprono l'allegato). Ma ogni programma di email NON avvia di certo un programma arrivato per email automaticamente.
Ma c'era proprio bisogno di inventarsi anche questo ?

- "Per il guru dei computer Jose Maria Crespo, "potremmo trovarci di fronte all'epidemia più grave della storia"
Chi cazzo e' questo "guru del computer Jose Maria Crespo", la mia breve ricerca con google mi ha prodotto principalmente un avvocato spagnolo che e' inserito su piu' di un sito matrimoniale (Avvocati di Madrid, 200 Bellissime spose russe ogni giorno, Love Compass)

- "Laboratorio Kasperskij" di Mosca, tra i più grandi produttori di sofware anti-virus"
E io che pensavo che la Mc-Afee (la piu' grande azienda di programmi antivirus) fosse Americana della California.

FANTASCIENZA: E' ASSURDO pernsare che la mafia russa con questo virus che attacca SCO e Microsoft potra' avere il controllo totale del vostro PC e di quello delle banche, accesso ai dati delle banche, e ai dati personali che valgono un sacco di soldi. Io non so voi ma se qualcuno accede ai dati del mio PC non trova di certo dati personali per cui chiedermi il riscatto, o rubarmi qualcosa sul mio PC.
Non me la immagino proprio la mafia russa a vendere gli indirizzi email sottobanco in nero, quando ci sono gia', purtroppo, societa' di marketing perfettamente legittime dedicate a questo. Le carte di credito poi sono una bufala.
Con questo io vi dico che ho un sergreto industriale nel mio PC e sfido qualunque haker a rubarmelo, ma anche se me lo rubasse lo sfido semplicemente a sapere quale e' sul mi disco di 40 GB.
Sarebbe comunque il caso di decidersi e' stato uno dei "colossi dell'informatica" oppure e' stata la "nuova mafia russa" a creare questo virus? Queste imprecisioni grossolane sono uin altro indicatore della completa infondatezza dell'articolo. E chi sarebbero poi questi "agenti segreti"?

COMUNQUE IL FATTO PRINCIPALE E' CHE QUESTO VIRUS E' STATO COSTRUITO SPECIFICATAMENTE PER ATTACCARE SCO E MICROSOFT, E NON PER RUBARE DATI PERSONALI sul vostro PC.

With the Google toolbar the words you type in the search box instead show up directly in the toolbar on the right of the last button, and simply clicking them will search them in the web page text.

Other great features of the Google toolbar are:
- Search in the page (already mentioned, the best)
- Highlight the searched words in the current web page
- Blog on Blogger directly from the Toolbar,loading the selected text) and the current web page (this is great)
- Search only the current web site
- I am feeling lucky search that gets you directly to the first result
- Next and Previous searched web site (great)
- Search for images, or the newsgroups, or the news, or directory
- Show the category of a web site
- Page rank
- Vote the page (good or bad)

I also use the Yahoo toolbar. It is very useful if you, like me, use the Yahoo services, like: Calendar: BriefCase, Groups, My Yahoo, Home page, On line status, messenger, weather, travel, news, email, movies, bookmarks, tv, ... (all these great services are free, and to see these features in the toolbar you must log into Yahoo)

The nice thing about the Yahoo toolbar is that the search box can be collapsed (removed), it is great for me since I use the Google toolbar for searching.
Another great feature in the yahoo toollbar is that it has many options and you can confugure and position each on them.

The MSN toolbar for now seems so simple that is useless compared to Google or Yahoo.

Therefore I personally use both Yahoo and Google
Yahoo just below the address bar and Google toolbars below just above the page.

I suggest for each toolbar to remove the text labels for the buttons, you will learn them in few seconds, and if you hover them with the mouse the name will show. I suggest the same in the IE toolbar.

WHAT IS THE BUSINESS MODEL OF THE SPAMMERS ?

I just would like to know how many people respond to spam email offering Viagra.
I would NEVER do business with somebody that sent me spam (or that wrote to me "this works, make mony quick, ...").
White list (receive email only from
thrusted senders you have already approved) do no not
work, because they will prevent you from receiving email
from people you don't already know, that is one of the
main uses of eMail.
Black list (preventing specific senders
from sending you email) clearly does not work, because
spammers change the senders address every time, and forge
them continuously.
Filters (stopping email with specific
words in the subject or message text) do not work,
because spammers forge headers and use various T*r-i_k~s
to evade filters
Opt out is absurd, since 99% of the time
I get junk mail I have NEVER signed up with any partner.
Most of the opt out links at the bottom of spam mail, do
not work, and they are instead used to verify your email
and spam you even more.
If any user did sign up for spam mail
(that is almost impossible) the sender must be able to
prove this with the record of the signup (but this can be
forged too so, it is not a good way to ensure validity)

A REGULATION IS REQUIRED, so that junk
mailers can be stopped and prosecuted.

PUNISHING SPAMMERS IS NOT HARD IF WE REALLY WANT TO.

The only thing all the spammers really want from us is money.
In order to be able to receive money they give DETAILED instruction on the email or on the link they advertise
on how to send them money (or subscribe to whatever, ...).
I am sure that EACH one of them can be tracked down in this way, this is where we should start fighting spam.
A law office should be estabilished and
funded by government and comunity to prosecute ALL
spammers, after verification of spamming activity. A
registry should be set up for spam messages, every user
can contribute sending spam messages it receive to the
office. The office should identify the senders of the
spam messages and prosecute the senders (as persons and
not business) based on the number of junk messages sent.
Spammers must send email with a valid
reply address, so that they can be identified. And should
keep record of the alleged subscription to the very
service they are offering by ALL the email address they
send to. Not complying with this should make the penalty
for spammers much worse. (Every message sent can always
be traced back to the sender with the proper tools)

How stupid is having to take off your shoes when you go through security at the airport ?
Ho stupid is to have to surrender your nail clippers, and tiny swiss army knifes ?

The reality is that this stupid screening is ONLY a mind game to have the people flying THINK they are secure when instead there is very LITTLE security for the pain we go through every time we have to board a plane.

As this student showed, it is quite easy to get box-cutters, plastic explosive and flamables into planes, if you really are trying to.
If you instead are a standard passenger, only concerned with your trip, you have to take of your shoes e surrender the swiss army knife (the tiny swiss army knife I used to take with me is one of the most useful things in the world to carry around when travelling)

I am really pissed off at the attitude of Aurport security.
It is just stupid to do have to pass through this kind of screening.

If it had any sense, why don't we do the same when boarding trains? or Buses ?
Why will a tiny swiss army knife be more dangerous than a metal pen.

They are forcing this on us to make us feel secure, as a Security administraion specialist said at CNN on 21 October 2003.
- He doesn't think that boxcutters will be used in a new terrorist attak (if this is the case why do you screen for it?)
- He is confident that the public feels more secure. (more secure my ass)
- They have confiscated 3 millions of ILLEGAL items (yes nail clippers).
- But the fact is that there are security level and that we expect boxcutters to pass throug securty (yes and why do you serach my bag ?)

This is all nonsense in my opinion.
The numbers just don't add up.
For example how many PC are travelling with the passengers these days. I think ALMOST one each passenger, but let's assume half.
There are millions of people flying every month.
Do we really think that turning on the PC, or being forces to bring it out of our case will help the screener to see if one of them is dangerous and pick the dangerous one in millions ?
I think NOT.

I just would like to know the statistic about this stupid security scam.
How many of the million of items that have been collected have EVER been used in a plane incident ?

This guy who
- Tested the screening system
- Showed that it does NOT work
- Advised the authorities before doing it, by email and phone calls
- Has been ignored by the security people
- Put some notes on the items he put on the planes, to prove that he has actually done it

He should be heard as a consultant from the security department, not tried on a court as a felon. He provides a servie,a heads up, he is not a terrorist.
His only fault is that he might have put a bug and set unease on the peole that REALLY thought that screening passengers made the airline travel more secure.
But I think it is more important that somebody told the reality of it instead
After all the government is spending an incredible amount of money on this screening that CLEARLY does NOT work.

It is just silly, like having the floating safety device, and no paraschute.
I just would like to know how many times this floating device saved lifes in a commercial plane crash.

Well this is the bottom line:

I don't need to be fed lies to feel secure.
And being screened like a felon going to jail when I travel doesn't make me feel any secure.
It just does make me angry.

So I tried it, here is my disappointment:

DO NOT INSTALL THIS PROGRAM.

- It ADDS UNWANTED Office Plug-ins that cannot be removed
- On EVERY created PDF at the bottom of EAHCH page it adds a FOOTER with its advertisement, that by itself it could be fine, but this footer OVERWRITES the bottom page of your document making it incomplete, unreadable, and therefore USELESS

A very stupid way to go with a software, I will never consider paying for it.

Coming creal I have to say that I am NOT a supporter of PDFs.
I don't see the need for this docuemnt format, I think that in most cases HTML will server the purpose.
In the PDF viewer, the serach is horrible, the controls are definetely NOT intuitive, you never really know what action takes place when you click a link in a document, jump somewhere else in the document, open a web browser, ....
YES, Printing is OK, but browsing a PDF docuemnt on the screen really sucks.

There are however very few situations where they might be useful, to print manuals with page numbers, and this is the ONLY reason I did the mistake of downloading this RoboPDF.
I, naturally, have PROMPTLY uninstalled it.

Asking myself why to kill trees when you have an electronic format of a document, I discovered that, beside few situation when you want to read it somewhere else especially if it is a complex matter, the most common reason to print a PDF document is again because browsing a PDF on the screen really sucks.

Yesterday the Raclette backing machine arrived.
Luisa did order it some days ago on line since we could not find it in any stores here in Florida.

It is not the original one that my mother has in Italy.
But it should be easier to use because it lets each person at the table to melt his own Raclette.

Luisa has miraculously found pieces of real Raclette cheese at the local grocery (Publix) and she bought a few pieces.

As soon as we have upacked the machine we got to try it. So for dinner we arranged to have Raclette with boiled potatoes, ham and some chesnuts.

It is amazing how great a dish so simple can be.
The cheese was terrific.

Cut the boiled potatoes in pieces and spay them with salt and pepper while you melt a piece of Raclette cheese in the macine that sits in the table center.
Put some chesunts and strips of ham on the potatoes.
When the cheese is melted pour it over the potatoes.

FANTASTIC.
If you never had Raclette before you ought to try it.

It was a long time since I had Raclette.
Swiss cheese is one of my favourite dish.
Naturally food is one of the things I miss most from Europe.

Luisa still remembers the first time she had it while visiting a friend of hers in France.
